Focussing on what’s wrong with D&D

I like the approach that is being taken with 4E, I admit it.  Two blog entries today have reinforced that.

First, Jennifer Clarke Wilkes talks briefly about advancing and templating monsters, and how WotC is trying to streamline that process from 3E.  Third Edition had its strengths, but scaling monsters quickly was not exactly one of them.

The second blog that caught my eye today was Chris Thomasson’s take on playing Keep on the Shadowfell.  Now, if you plan on playing in this adventure, don’t read the blog, there are spoilers.  But there are several phrases that stuck with me from this entry:  “A running battle ensued,” “halfling warlock,” and ”dragonborn paladin” are interesting ideas.  The thing that I liked, though, was ” The monsters all had something interesting to do.”  That’s a good thing, for this tired old DM.  Frankly, my 3E monsters were starting to get a little monotonous…
