wow. i'm right there with larry. at 51, i don't see me changing my mental relaxation technique. i too, have been playing 35 years (that chainmail book is somewhere on the bookshelf in here). i'm not fond of 3e or 3.5e. and don't even start with me on 4e. not happening. i've incorporated d20 into my 2e play, and my group seems to be happy with it. stop playing? not unless a stroke eliminates my capacity for destroying player's egos. nope not a chance. my group is composed of my son's friends, mostly sk8r-bois and hangers-on; 18-23 years old. they all have run worlds, we have enjoyed playing in them. but they always come crawling back to see if i will run a session. heart warming, to say the least. the point is to have fun with it! roll me a d20, please...

Great site, love the fact that people think about their responses. Will I always play D&D? I don't know. I am only 53 and have been playing for 35 years (lol). Sometimes when a group disbands there may be a long break before a new group starts up. My current group has my 40 year old friend, his 20 year old daughter and her husband. We started playing back when she was about 13 or so. However, I have abandoned D&D 4E, as Pathfinder fits our interests much more. Best of luck everyone and keep rolling 20's.

I did a Google search and came across this website. Basically, I was feeling strange (immature I guess) about reading my D&D books. I was googling something like "what age should people play D&D". Somehow I landed on this site, and by luck this blog entry.

I am 37 years old and really enjoy reading Forgotten Realms and other types of novels. I have some of the 3.5 and 4e books but haven't had time to play. I basically just read through them and wish I could play. I don't know anyone in my area that does play. I guess I am glad to read others my age still play the game. I feel less immature that way - thanks!

I was surfing and ran on this site. So happy to see those in their 30's+ still playing. I am 45 years young and Dungeons & Dragons is still the most enjoyable game I have ever played. I will never stop playing and I will never stop creating. And I couldn't care less about 4th Edition. All one needs is a Dungeon Master's Guide and a Player's Handbook (other books are nice too), and the world is ours. This game was never about the system or the books (that's just good business sense.) It was always about our minds, and the complete unwillingness to buckle under the barage of mind-numbing material infesting the world today. Wizards of the Coast could crumble tomorrow and we wouldn't need another thing. And by the way, who ever said that this makes people "geeks" or "nerds"? Ha ha. I've always thought that was so ridiculous. If anything, D&D helps those "wall flowers" in school expand their social skills and learn to work cohesively as a unit. Healthy D&D players have always been the most well rounded people I have ever socialized with. Certainly the most imaginative and interesting. I don't view D&D as a game really, I think of it as a "place." There are rules when you go to a nightclub, or to a social club, or when you're throwing a dinner, or when your doing (whatever.) And if you don't follow those rules, you are penalized (generally socially.) D&D is a place with rules. It is a partition in our minds where we get to have an opportunity to step away from this crazy world, into another more-or-less managable one. I choose to have that for my whole life. And I will spend the rest of my life showing anyone who is interested, how to reach that "place."

I have to say that I've played less since leaving college but have enjoyed the games more (maybe because they're rarer).

For me timesavers like virtual tabletops and dice are a must - I want to get in as much play time as possible.

Really enjoyed the article, thanks.

I am 38 and have no plans to quit playing. I hope that when I get too old to roll the dice I can hit a button on a small device to randomize a set of virtual dice :)

I am married and plan on having kids in the next few years. I will teach them how to play DnD or something similar. I hope they enjoy the games I teach them so the spirit of the game lives on.

p.s. I've read the 4th Ed. players manual and will not be going to 4th Ed. It's lost the creativity.

[...] I hear that over and over again. Folks that take a few years off, sometimes as much as a decade, always wind up playing again. For my part, I think I’ll always be playing RPGs. [...]

@Tommi - I like that... playing D&D in the afterlife. Neat concept.

@ReaperBrian - That's true. Even when we're not playing, we're still gamers. It is, in many ways, a lifestyle.

@Trask - Just use the 4E virtual tabletop. Of course, you'll need a huge screen...

@Kam - neat picture, I like the whole park thing. It sounds odd to us because D&D is a relatively new game; hasn't been around nearly as long as chess, so we've not seen old guys playing it in the park yet.

@Greenman - well said.

@Apis (g) - Tru dat. And don't worry, we'll start up again soon enough.

The DM's last blog post..Game Masters Day - Better Late Than Never!

I guess Reaperbryan pretty much summed up my feelings. While I'll take a break now and then gaming is in my blood.

How else would I be able to juggle D&D twice a month, EQ 40+ hrs a week, LoTRO spuratically (lifetime membership), a loving relationship with my spouse (omg that woman is a saint), keep slightly less than what I'd like contact with friends, and a steady job?

Till I can't pick up the dice or afford someone to toss them for me I says. Even then there is still Everway.

Although I'm down the 2 games per month... grr ready to play theme ongoing in my posts it seems.

But you get the point.
